Orthodontic Instructions

Brushing

  1. Our office will provide your family with an electric toothbrush to use with your braces. Use this toothbrush in the morning and at night before bed. For best results, follow complete instructions of proper use of this toothbrush.
  2. Brush with your regular toothbrush whenever you eat. Make a special effort to clean the area between the edge of the bracket and the gums.
  3. Look closely in a mirror to be sure all of your teeth and braces “sparkle.”
  4. Removable appliances must be kept clean. Brush them every time you brush your teeth. Rinse them thoroughly after eating.

Flossing

To clean between teeth, use dental floss threaders or Glide threader floss, included with your brushing kit.

Sore Teeth and Gums

  1. Teeth may be sore for a few days following the insertion of initial arch wires or after a change of arch wires. If this occurs:
    • Take ibuprofen or Tylenol as needed
    • Use warm salt water rinses (1 tsp. salt in 8 oz. warm water); and let the heat work.
    • Eat softer foods for a while.
    • KEEP TEETH AND GUMS CLEAN, keep brushing.
  2. New braces may irritate the inside of the cheek or lips. When this occurs, pad the braces with wax (included in your kit) to stop the irritation.

Loose Braces

Check your braces daily for damage (loose brackets, broken wires etc.) If something is broken or if you can’t follow our instructions, call our office immediately.

Always check for sharp pokey wires before you leave the office. Also, make certain you understand how to follow instructions before you leave our office.

Remember: Your help is needed each and every day. Thank you for your cooperation.
